PROJECT DETAILS

The historic palm house in the botanical gardens of Justus Liebig University in Giessen has been rebuilt in line with its listed status. Project-specific roof and façade systems from WICONA were used. Built in 1907, the Palm House - consisting of a central domed building with one side aisle each - is located in the oldest botanical university garden in Germany and was unusable for a long time following its destruction in the Second World War. As part of the construction work, the adjoining show greenhouses were renovated and a new social wing for the gardeners and a Victoria House were built on an area of approx. 800 m² in addition to the three-aisled building.

A glass house system that impresses

When realising the curved roof construction of the palm house, the planners from Haas Architekten (Berlin) relied on the highly insulated and thermally separated VARIOLUX Thermo36 hi system - the highly thermally insulated WICTEC 50 HI system was used as the perfect complement to this on the façade. The complete building envelopes of the other greenhouses were also realised with the VARIOLUX system. In combination with the air conditioning technology located in the buildings, the WICONA systems now ensure an optimum supply of heat and daylight to the plants - and thus a growth-promoting indoor climate. The restored Palm House is now once again an integral part of research and teaching at the university and can also be used for concerts and university events in the summer.
