PROJECT DETAILS

A façade over 2,000 metres above sea level, built with WICONA aluminium systems

Designed by architectural firm “Architekten Mair & Dorfmann”, the new Piz Boè Alpine Lounge (Corvara, Italy) occupies a lofty position among the high-altitude constructions. This is because one of the main challenges of this project was to create a mountain hut with top-of-the-range thermal performance at an altitude of over 2,000 metres, in no more than seven months. This was achieved using materials with high energy savings specifications, ensuring the desired standard was met while preserving the natural environment.

The hut is bordered on one side by the ski slopes and on the other by an expanse of Alpine forest. To give prominence and pay maximum respect to the natural surroundings, the architects designed a low, extensive building of just one volume. The materials used include dolomitic rock—coming from the Alps region—as well as wood. The idea behind the design was for a space divided between the mountain station, the lodge and a restaurant, which has capacity for 40 seated diners and 200 people in the self-service area. The mountain hut has 12 rooms for staff. Covering an area of over 1,300 m2, the facilities are clearly intended to form an open part of the landscape. With this in mind, the architects came up with a façade comprising 34 linear metres of glazing to let users of the building feel part of the nature surrounding them.

Given the particularities and location of the project, the technical requirements were a major challenge. As such, the architects decided to use Wicona aluminium systems as well as systems from Vitralux (the façade constructors leading the works), aiming to create large glazed panels with views towards Alta Badia. Windows from the WICLINE 75 evo series were installed, making it possible to achieve thermal insulation values of up to Uf 1.2 W/(m2K), as required by regulations.

WICLINE 75 evo windows and WICSTYLE 75 evo doors respond in a straightforward and effective manner to this project’s demanding weather conditions. Based on the patented ETC intelligence® technology, the thermal break counteracts the major temperature differences felt between winter and summer ( -25° to 70°). This keeps it comfortable indoors as well as contributing to the mountain hut’s sustainability, given that the Wicona polyamide thermal breaks are 100% recycled. The WICLINE 75 evo concealed sash system combined with the mechanical strength of the WICTEC 50 curtain wall—bearing in mind the need to withstand wind pressures four times greater than normal—blend together perfectly with the project’s design and its elevated light demands, minimising the surfaces in contact with the outdoors.

The WICSTYLE 75 evo door helped to create large-scale dimensions and support significant weights, without losing its ease of use and durability. This is thanks to its joining system and hinges specially designed for this function. It is also worth noting that trucks with 4x4 engine and chains were needed for transportation of the glass. In addition, the Wicona solutions used has achieved the Bronze level in the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Product Standard.

The structure’s core consists of a lounge bar with a wood-burning fireplace in the centre, for a chance to relax during a day out skiing. A large glazed area measuring over 20 metres looks out over the outer patio, where you can enjoy the mountain air and the spectacular views while sheltered from the powerful winds.

Indoors, materials such as wood, glass and stone feature strongly. The rock was obtained from the material excavated during the on-site works and was used for all stonework.
