PROJECT DETAILS

Pioneering office architecture

Innovative high-rise project "K8" in Stavanger with closed cavity façade realised by WICONA

The "K8" is an architectural highlight in the heart of the Norwegian city of Stavanger. Designed by Schmidt Hammer Larsen (SHL) and soon to be BREEAM NORExcellent and WELL Gold certified, the office tower sets new standards in user-friendliness and sustainability. WICONA's innovative closed cavity façade also plays an important role.

Pioneering project for the future

Considered a pioneering prestige project for the future development of Stavanger, the 16-storey high-rise "K8" is located in the heart of the central business district. The structure, which is located near the main train station and has its main entrance adjacent to the green "Tivoliparken" city park, is designed to provide direct lines of connection to the surrounding environment and so become an integral part of the city, according to the architects. The office tower has 15,000 square metres of flexible space that may be used for a variety of purposes. For example, the first two levels feature a café, a canteen, a lobby, as well as exhibition and event rooms. The top floor is dedicated to restaurants, bars, and public spaces with a panoramic view of the city and the fjord, while the remaining floors have open, bright office spaces with 600 workstations.

Characteristic façade design

Inspired by Scandinavian architecture, the office tower has a simple, modern design and a versatile construction. WICONA's innovative glass/aluminium façade and green terraces in a variety of heights and layouts give the "K8" an unmistakable character. One of the systems used was the WICTEC Modul air closed cavity façade (CCF), which was custom-made for the project. The high-tech system, which features integrated solar shading and an ingenious dry air system inside the closed cavity, significantly reduces the need to clean the façade over the entire lifecycle and also makes a significant contribution to the building's energy efficiency. To complement the CCF system, WICONA experts developed a project-specific solution based on the WICTEC EL evo aluminium element façade. As the two façade systems look identical when viewed from the outside, the architectural design can be executed with great attention to detail. By offsetting the elements in the facetted areas, the design boxes could be staggered on the outside. The profiles of the WICONA façade were designed with slim elevation widths and a high proportion of glass, which allows for more daylight in the interior of the building - without compromising on thermal insulation in summer and winter.

To sum up: A pioneering project - and a new "lighthouse" in Stavanger.
